Scientific conference ” Elevating Ophthalmology in the Digital Era” – connection and progress

On March 22–23, Saigon Eye Hospital, Vietnam’s largest specialized eye hospital system, collaborated with Carl Zeiss to organize the scientific conference “Elevating Ophthalmology in the Digital Era with the Zeiss Medical Ecosystem” in Ho Chi Minh City. The event attracted over 300 doctors and medical professionals nationwide, reinforcing the reputation of the two organizations in the field of ophthalmology.

The program brought together renowned doctors from Central Eye Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, Saigon Eye Hospital, Nethradhama Hospital (India), Cao Thang Ophthalmology Hospital, and other eye specialty hospitals across the country. All shared a common goal: to enhance the quality of Vietnam’s ophthalmic expertise and align with international standards.

The conference featured research presentations from leading experts  and  fostered opportunities for doctors to exchange professional knowledge and build professional connections .

Over 20 specialized reports were presented, covering key ophthalmic topics such as refractive surgery, presbyopia treatment, and cataract treatment. The latest clinical research and treatment methods were thoroughly analyzed and discussed, offering valuable insights for attending physicians.

One of the highlights was the presentation by Dr. Truong Cong Minh, Specialist Level II and Executive Director of Saigon Eye Hospital Le Thi Rieng, on “Techniques for New Surgeons in SMILE/SMILE PRO Surgery.” He shared standardized surgical procedures to ensure safety and efficacy, along with practical guidance on managing common complications. With over 160,000 successful refractive surgeries performed, Dr. Minh distilled invaluable experience to help new surgeons gain confidence in their techniques. His report earned significant interest from conference participants.

Another notable presentation, “The Quatera 700 Phaco System: A New Era in Phaco Surgery”, was delivered by Dr. Tran Van Ket, Specialist Level II and Executive Director of Saigon Eye Hospital Can Tho. He discussed optimizing Phaco energy with POD mode, enhancing surgical safety and efficiency. Additionally, the Zeiss Cataract Workflow system was introduced to digitize procedures, minimize manual steps, and shorten surgery time. The report highlighted a 100% patient satisfaction rate with post-operative vision, marking a significant advancement in cataract treatment.

A pivotal report was delivered by Dr. Le Nguyen Huy Cuong, Specialist Level II, Deputy Medical Director and Head of Refractive Surgery Department at Saigon Eye Hospital Ngo Gia Tu. His research on “Compensating Cyclotorsion with OcuLign in SMILE Pro for Astigmatism Correction” highlighted the precision and effectiveness of SMILE Pro technology in treating astigmatism. The study compared automated and semi-automated OcuLign modes to optimize astigmatism axis adjustment, demonstrating improved safety, reduced surgery time, and higher patient satisfaction. This represents a major advancement in astigmatism treatment, with potential for broader application.

The conference also featured updates from leading physicians and experts in public and private sectors on digital applications in ophthalmic care. Topics included digital techniques in glaucoma treatment, standardized refractive surgery workflows, and AI-assisted diagnosis of chronic eye conditions.

Mr. Ven Raman, General Director of Carl Zeiss Southeast Asia, emphasized that the strategic partnership between Carl Zeiss and Saigon Eye Hospital not only elevates professional standards but also accelerates the transfer of new technologies to Vietnam’s ophthalmology sector. This collaboration opens opportunities to enhance domestic eye care services and raising Vietnam’s global ophthalmic profile.

Dr. Truong Cong Minh reflected on the conference’s significance: “This is an international professional platform for leading doctors and hospitals in Vietnam. We hope ophthalmologists will continue to embrace new knowledge and modern techniques to best serve their patients.”

The “Elevating Ophthalmology in the Digital Era” conference underscored the importance of knowledge-sharing in healthcare, demonstrating Vietnam’s commitment to sustainable ophthalmic development amid globalization. The event contributed to improving vision care quality and strengthening Vietnam’s position in global ophthalmology.
